Those of you who love wilderness activities during the wintertime will be very happy to visit the Lapland region. Located in the arctic circle, the Lapland region covers thousands of kilometers of beautiful and unspoiled scenery that will amaze winter lovers.
Here are some of the winter wilderness activities in Lapland that you can take part in:
Husky dog sled rides. Few of us have ever had the opportunity to lead a team of husky dogs on a trek throughout the Arctic. This is an activity that can be fun for the whole family and that you will definitely not want to miss. Dog sled rides are organized by various groups in the region. You will be provided with the necessary equipment and taught how to give commands to the dogs. Don’t be afraid of the dogs! Contrary to what some people may think, huskies are actually very friendly with humans and truly enjoy their company.
Reindeer sled rides. Reindeer have always been a part of the culture of Lapland, especially that of the Sami people that have traditionally inhabited the area. While reindeer are not commonly used for transportation anymore, taking a ride on a sled pulled by reindeer can be a fun way to explore the Lapland wilderness. Many reindeer farms offer sled rides. You can either control your own sled or simply sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Ice fishing. Do you like fishing and want to do it in a unique way? Try ice wishing on one of the frozen lakes in Lapland. It is a great activity to enjoy as a group. You can catch different types of fish, such as salmon or perch. A fishing permit is not required to practice ice fishing, as fish are a resource that belong to “Everyman’s rights”.
